Are Durable Devices Better Than Protective Gadgets

At CES 2013, there were various companies looking to provide consumers with the best gadgets in the industry. These gadgets were proven to protect expensive cell phones that cost consumers hundreds of dollars. One gadget was said to resist a mallet. Another would protect the phone against a bowling ball. Yet another would make the phone resistant to a knife. While protection was obviously on the mind of exhibitors and consumers at CES, there may have been a better way of going about it.

Durable Devices

Although cases, sleeves, and other gear will protect a Smartphone from mallets, bowling balls, and knives, more developers are striving to make the devices more durable to begin with. This begins before the phone is available for consumers to purchase. One technology that provides this is nano-coating, which is a water-proofing process for electronics. The nano-coating can be applied to the device before anyone is allowed to purchase it. What this means is that when the phone falls in the toilet, it can be cleaned and used again.

The type of glass used for Smartphones is something else that is being improved before phones are available for purchase. Gorilla Glass 3 is a version of new glass that improves the glass by three times. Scratches are less visible, residual stress is reduced, and the screen of the phone is more shatter-resistant against drops or hard blows.

Throughout CES 2013, there were plenty of booths that showed torturous situations for phones to be in. These methods proved that the phone companies’ products were the most durable to begin with. Whether a phone was submerged in a fish bowl full of water, or had a pitcher of water dumped on it, it was obvious that initial durability was at the top of everyone’s to-do list.

Why Durability?

There are some who may wonder why the sudden drive towards more durable devices. The answer is simple: more and more individuals have more and more phones and other electronic devices out in the world. Almost half of the adults in America own a Smartphone, according to a study done by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Additionally, the same study showed that nearly 25% of adults in America also have some type of tablet.

“Handheld electronics have become such an integral part for everyone,” said Felipe Pimineto of Drywired.com. Individuals depend on these devices. They are made thinner and lighter to be more convenient for users. While this is a good thing for consumers, it also makes the devices more susceptible to breaks. Unfortunately, some consumers simply do not want to deal with the inevitable breaks or other damage from such a phone.

With more durable devices, consumers do not have to hold that worry. They can watch as their investment plunges into a puddle, gets scratched, or falls to the ground, and not have to worry that they will pay high costs for repair or replacement.

A Smart Choice

More durable phones and tablets are simply a smarter choice for the device makers, as well as the consumers. There are only a certain amount of gadgets someone can use to protect their phone, but if the phone comes more durable to begin with, consumers may be more enticed to spend their money.
